We live in a world with an abundance of food choices. But how do we choose? There are so many nutrition claims. How do we go beyond attention-grabbing headlines and marketing gimmicks?
We need to eat to sustain ourselves. Our daily eating habits affect our energy level and productivity. They also impact our long-term health. Poor choices often result in chronic diseases like diabetes, cancer, and heart ailments (www.cdc.gov/chronicdisease/index.htm).
Food is also part of our culture. The choices we make reflect who we are, our family, our friends, and our associates.
Cooking shows are popular on TV. But we tend to have limited time to cook. We surely have the convenience of ready-made food with fast-food and take-out from restaurants and supermarkets. For this convenience, we have little control over nutrient and ingredient quality. But with little planning and simple recipes we can cook and eat better quite efficiently.
Cooking can also be a creative and fun hobby. It can be a great activity for kids to help them learn about food and prepare them for better food choices later in their life.
Food labels can be confusing. Marketing of "new and improved" products can be misleading. For example a new fat-free product may contain more sugar than before. Even kids are often used as easy targets.
